Perfecting the Arabic User Experience Design

Last month, a clothing brand consulted me after spending over 150,000 SAR on platform promotion with disappointing returns. After revamping their campaign, we achieved a dramatic increase in advertising efficiency.

For a software company, we adjusted their worldwide graphic components to better align with Saudi visual tastes while preserving brand consistency. This approach enhanced their visual connection by over one hundred twenty percent.

Powerful techniques:

  • Partnering with Saudi technology providers
  • Adapting solutions for local infrastructure
  • Encouraging capability building to Saudi workforce
  • Participating in Kingdom digital programs

A few weeks ago, I was consulting with a major e-commerce company that had poured over 200,000 SAR on a stunning website that was failing miserably. The problem? They had simply translated their English site without accounting for the essential design distinctions needed for Arabic users.

Key considerations:

  • Involving faith authorities in modernization planning

  • Acknowledging religious periods in execution timelines

  • Developing culturally sensitive education activities

  • Showcasing harmony with national vision

  • Created a numerical presentation system that accommodated both Arabic and English numbers

  • Reorganized charts to read from right to left

  • Applied graphical cues that corresponded to Saudi cultural associations

I advise organizing competitors as:

  • Primary competitors (offering very similar products/Riyadh SEO services compared)
  • Secondary competitors (with some similarity)
  • Potential disruptors (new entrants with disruptive models)

I use a basic spreadsheet to record our competition's costs adjustments every week. This has allowed us to:

  • Discover seasonal promotion cycles

  • Recognize product bundling strategies

  • Grasp their value positioning

  • Clearly indicate which language should be used in each form element

  • Intelligently switch keyboard language based on field type

  • Place form text to the right side of their connected inputs

  • Confirm that validation messages appear in the same language as the expected input

Essential features:

  • Maintaining personal interactions for bond-creation

  • Automating operational processes for effectiveness

  • Developing natural flows between automated and established touchpoints

  • Respecting generational preferences

  • Relocated product images to the left area, with product details and call-to-action buttons on the right side

  • Changed the image carousel to progress from right to left

  • Implemented a custom Arabic font that maintained clarity at various sizes

For a retail client, we discovered that their spoken question appearance was restricted because they had developed primarily for non-Arabic questions. After adding customized local spoken question enhancement, their visibility increased by two hundred seventeen percent.

Working with a high-end retailer, we identified that their native communication was substantially lower quality than their foreign language identity. After achieving balance between the language versions, they saw a 93% increase in brand perception among Saudi consumers.

A wellness organization saw a one hundred seventy-eight percent improvement in name familiarity after implementing a platform-specific identity approach that recognized the special characteristics of each virtual medium in the Saudi context.

For a store group, we implemented a hybrid approach that balanced technological advancement with traditional value of personal interaction. This approach enhanced user contentment by 167% while producing process enhancements.

For a global fashion business, we established a regionally-focused online identity approach that incorporated elegant cultural references. This technique improved their emotional connection by one hundred sixty-seven percent in just six months.

  • Place the most critical content in the top-right area of the viewport
  • Organize content blocks to advance from right to left and top to bottom
  • Use heavier visual importance on the right side of symmetrical compositions
  • Confirm that pointing icons (such as arrows) direct in the appropriate direction for RTL layouts

I spend at least 120 minutes each Monday examining our competitors':

  • Website organization and UX
  • Blog posts and content calendar
  • Digital channels activity
  • User feedback and ratings
  • Search tactics and rankings

As someone who has created over 30 Arabic websites in the recent years, I can confirm that applying Western UX standards to Arabic interfaces simply doesn't work. The special features of Arabic language and Saudi user behaviors require a specialized approach.

When I established my retail business three years ago, I was certain that our unique products would sell themselves. I overlooked competitive research as unnecessary – a decision that practically cost my entire venture.

I now employ several tools that have dramatically enhanced our competitor analysis:

  • Search analysis platforms to analyze competitors' search rankings
  • Brand monitoring tools to follow rivals' social activity
  • Digital tracking tools to observe changes to their digital properties
  • Email capture to get their campaigns
